Work Smarter, Not Harder: Add a Little Fun to the Workplace
We at Oozle Media have always endeavored to maintain a fun and flexible work environment. We believe that a little spontaneity can never be a bad thing, and that a sense of humor is always a plus. And the occasional foosball tournament, mandatory theme day, and field trip to visit the local athletic team’s mascot can help keep the workplace fun, energetic, and spontaneous.
But is it practical?
Yes, yes, we know what you’re thinking: “Foosball tournaments? Field trips? – That sounds fun, but how does anything ever get done?” After all, “flexible,” “fun,” and “spontaneous” probably aren’t the kinds of words most would associate with a productive work environment. But such activities don’t just reduce employee stress levels—they help increase office productivity and creativity. Studies have shown that less rigid workplaces are often the most productive, and a little bit of noise (even if it’s the noise of your coworker telling a joke or of the foosball table in the next room) can actually help get the creative juices flowing.
After all, no one wants to work in a place that’s all work, all the time. It doesn’t mean that your office isn’t structured and well-ordered—it just means that employees should be able to have some time to enjoy themselves rather than having to work in an environment of constant high pressure and stress. If they find themselves stuck on a problem, they should feel free to take a foosball break when it matters most.
Any Other Benefits?
Besides enhancing office productivity and creativity, by adding “fun” to the workplace, you also:
• Increase employee morale and job satisfaction (and happy employees make for more productive employees)
• Create a more open work environment where employees feel free to express themselves (after all, that weird, off-the-wall idea they’ve been thinking about may actually be pretty brilliant)
• Build team spirit and cooperation (working together during the office foosball tournament will help build office camaraderie)
There are many things you can do to add a little fun to the workplace. So go ahead, put an air hockey table in the break room and start karaoke days. Be creative, and work smarter, not harder.
