They don’t call us “fun loving community advocates” for nothing!  On March 24th and 25th, Oozle Media sponsored the very prestigious  Skills USA Web Development contest which was hosted by the Salt Lake Community College.

What was the competition all about?

The contest consisted of 12 teams which included high school and college students from the Salt Lake valley.  The students were instructed to design and program a website in eight hours for one of our clients, Vanguard Golf Management.  Vanguard Golf Management offers full-service course management operations and is recognized as a premier manager and developer of quality golf courses along the Wasatch Front.

The students were provided with company pictures and a site map, and then were left to fend for themselves.  The 24 total contestants had to complete an online skills assessment in order to qualify for the competition, and the two winners will get to compete in the National Skills USA Web Development competition in June.

What was our role?

Oozle Media fulfilled the role of the Technical Committee Chair which allowed us to ensure the contest followed along with industry standards.  We also participated on the Judging Panel, along with Mark Whetzel, CEO of Vanguard Golf Management, and donated the winning prizes.

After the websites were completed on Thursday both the judges and students reassembled together at the SLCC Redwood Campus early Friday morning.  Each team had 15 minutes to present and the judges were given an hour to deliberate on which website was not only the most visually appealing, but also highly functional.

Who were the winners? Drum roll, please…

The winners of the competition were Alarico Montoya and Elleri Petersen!

This year Alarico will graduate from West Jordan High and Canyons Technical Education Center.  Currently, he’s working on his Associates Degree at Salt Lake Community college.  However, right now he’s “not really feeling school” and would rather be designing sites and playing the video game Halo (he used to play competitively until he decided to focus more on client work).

Elleri Petersen is currently a student at Canyons Technical Education Center and Alta High School.  In the future, she’d like to attend the University of Phoenix to study web development.  She spends most of her time playing World of War Craft and her character is an 85 Night Elf Druid that’s a pretty shade of blue with a hint of purple.
